Greenwashing: the truth behind sustainability

Sustainability has become a hot topic in the business world. But sometimes it's hard to see through the appearance of greenwashing. Greenwashing, the phenomenon where companies pretend to be greener than they really are, is something we regularly encounter. Sometimes this happens consciously, for marketing purposes, but often also out of ignorance.

Greenwashing comes in different forms. From the use of nature images to misleading labels, the intention is to create an image of sustainability without always corresponding to reality. Terms such as 'pure', 'natural' and 'sustainable' are often used inappropriately, without always being accompanied by concrete actions. What companies often do not know is that making a sustainability claim while your product or service is not sustainable is punishable. This is called deception or Greenwashing. The Consumer & Market Authority checks whether your sustainability claim is justified.

But let's not forget that most organizations sincerely strive for sustainability. They want to make a positive impact on the environment and society. The problem often lies in the lack of awareness. Organizations sometimes think they are more sustainable than they really are, without having a complete picture of their impact on the environment.

How can RCN help you?
At RCN we believe that awareness is the basis for this. That is why we offer waste scans with which we can analyze and improve the waste management of organizations. By gaining insight into their waste flows, targeted actions can be taken to achieve their sustainability goals.
